Age: Who knows?? But he at least acts like an adult.

Canon Point: After Alphys repairs him at least, but before the barrier is taken down.

Personality:
Mettaton loves himself and that's the first thing you have to know. At every turn, he makes himself the star of any given moment and finds ways to make everything about himself. As the biggest star in the Underworld, he's definitely got that stereotypical star behavior. During his battle, he makes you write about what you like best about him. If you insult him? He just brushes it off as “this is supposed to be about me, not you”. Mettaton, master of burns. He definitely has self-love down to a t. Probably a little too much. As shown in one of the endings where he becomes ruler of the Underworld and well. If you have anything bad to say about him or don't like him then you simply disappear. Power and his own selfish goals can get to his head and he is downright awful at leading. He's terrible to his employees (one of them says he actually made an album full of all the ways that this certain employee is awful at their job) and the hotel he runs is horribly run and nobody really likes how things are, but can't really complain. Mettaton wouldn't listen anyway. He's very sure of himself and if people don't like what he's doing then they just don't have good taste!
And the thing about Mettaton is that he really does love himself this much. It isn't some clever act or ruse to hide something. It stems from his past because he was not always a sexy robot, but a ghost completely unhappy with his body who dreamed of humans. So much that he dedicated a fan club to them. In his diaries and just by his old room alone, you can see how much he yearned to be a star and he doesn't sound the same. Much more complacent and just a touch of sadness because with his body he can't live his dreams. So when he meets Alphys who makes him the body he's always dreamed about? Well, of course when he gets that body he does nothing but love it. Mettaton is finally in the body he has always wanted, a way he can finally feel like himself (as he states himself), and so he's vain. His appearance and job is everything because this is actually everything he wanted. Mettaton's dreams and motivations are his number one priority. He leaves his cousin behind just to achieve them.
That isn't to say he's completely selfish. After all, he goes through a whole elaborate act to make Alphys look good for Frisk as he plays the evil robot set on killing the human. This does have some selfish reasons to it as this also helps his ratings for his show, but he does it out of his sense of loyalty for her. She did make him the body he always dreamed about and in her room is actually a signed poster from him thanking her. There's a sense of gratitude to her and in multiple routes of this game, he shows this loyalty to her. In the no mercy run, he stays behind to try to buy her more time from being killed by the human and it's actually at this part of the game you can stop a no mercy run and make it neutral. Mettaton actually tries to make you go neutral. And in the ending where he becomes ruler, amongst all the statues of himself he builds one for Alphys because he states he doesn't think he was very good to her. Mettaton isn't all about himself all the time, even if he does actually drop the act to go ahead with his own plan to become a star on the surface. To Mettaton, it's better he does this than to have another war amongst humans and monsters break out. Remember, Mettaton actually made a fan club to humans when he was a ghost. He doesn't want to see anymore humans or monsters die. It's a pointless battle.
And what makes him drop the decision to selfishly go to the surface? When multiple fans call in to his show and say they don't want his show in the Underground to end. He's visibly touched by all of it. It's then that he states that while the surface has many stars, the monsters only have him and they need him to bring cheer to their lives. His fans mean a lot to him because it's also thanks to his fans that he can now live his dream. Without them, he can't be the Mettaton he wants to be and it's shown to one fan, he actually gives them a dress he had been wearing earlier. His fanbase will always get consideration from him.
Mettaton is vain and cares a great deal about himself, but when put in the right situations he shows that he can put others before himself. Even the cousin he leaves behind, he shows guilt in his diaries for doing so and it's shown in the best ending possible that he reunited with them and they are now a star with him as well. In the end, he will think of himself first, but there's still room in his heart for others there. It will probably just be filled with signed posters of himself.
Abilities: Mettaton has three forms and each have different abilities. As Mettaton, his rectangle form, his defense is at 999 and every attack on him in the game is shown as a miss because of this defense. He also has a rocket to help him fly around in this body and it's the one he's usually in. Mettaton EX is not a finished body and his defense is much lower, but this is the body you do the boss battle with. He can attack with his heart (soul) with electricity, but this form has a very poor battery life since Alphys never finished it. Mettaton NEO is a form that's only in the no mercy run and we never see him attack as he is just a glass cannon, but he has a cannon for an arm.
Also as a robot, he doesn't need to eat or any other human things. However he does need to recharge and will become lifeless if he doesn't have battery power. It's also shown that he can pick and choose parts of his body since we see him in his rectangle form with the legs of Mettaton EX.
Alignment: I'm going to go with Elios. While I don't think hatred fits him at all, I do think love plays a very important role for him. He's very much in love with himself and because of that love, it inspires him to do many things. But he does actually care about a lot of certain people. When he went through that entire act for Alphys and then shown how much he does care about Napstablook even if he did leave them in the end.
